NAPLAN explained · A TESTHERO GUIDE

NAPLAN results and proficiency levels

Read the report as one piece of learning evidence, then use it to start a specific conversation with the teacher.

Understand the four levels

What do the four NAPLAN proficiency levels mean?

Read these labels with the year level and assessment area. The skills expected become more demanding across the NAPLAN years. A level is a summary of test performance, not a complete description of a child.

A plain-language introduction to current proficiency reporting
LevelHow to understand it
ExceedingAchievement is above the expectation for that assessment area at testing.
StrongAchievement meets the challenging, reasonable expectation set for testing.
DevelopingThe learner is progressing towards that expectation.
Needs additional supportThe result signals a need for additional help with the expected learning.

How to read an individual student report

Begin with the report’s own key. It identifies the learner’s result, the comparison information and the proficiency levels. Read each assessment area separately rather than reducing the whole report to one label.

Official results use five scales: Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Numeracy. That is why Conventions of Language produces two reporting areas even though it is one test domain.

  • Identify the year level and assessment area.
  • Find the learner’s result using the report key.
  • Read the skill summary for that proficiency level.
  • Notice patterns across areas, including differences between spelling and grammar and punctuation.
  • Compare the result with classroom work and the teacher’s observations.

What happened to the NAPLAN bands?

Reports from 2008–2022 used the older achievement-band system. From 2023, proficiency reporting and the measurement scales changed. Results from the two reporting periods should not be compared directly.

If you find a “band calculator” or an old conversion table, check the years it describes. An old band label is not a current proficiency level, and a practice percentage cannot fill that gap.

Why do 2026 Writing results carry a caution?

A technical disruption on the first day of NAPLAN 2026 affected some students taking online Writing in Years 5, 7 and 9. All individual reports for those three year levels include a caution about interpreting 2026 Writing results. Year 3 Writing was unaffected because it was completed on paper.

The caution does not establish that every student was disrupted. If you have a question about a child’s result, ask the school and consider the teacher’s evidence of their writing. This is specific to the 2026 administration; check future-year guidance separately.

Why a practice percentage is different

An independent practice score reflects a particular set of questions and the conditions of that attempt. It may help you notice which kinds of work need review, but it is not an official scale score.

NAPLAN’s tailored tests use information about the questions encountered as well as answers. The same raw number of correct answers is therefore not a universal conversion to an official result. TestHero does not claim NAPLAN scale equivalence.

Turn the report into a useful teacher conversation

Choose one area to discuss and bring a recent example of classroom or home work. Ask which specific skill would be most useful to strengthen and what an appropriate activity would look like.

For example, a broad concern about Numeracy might lead to checking whether the learner can represent a ratio. A Reading concern might lead to comparing a stated detail with an inference. The report starts the question; teaching evidence helps narrow the answer.

  • Does this result fit what you are seeing in class?
  • Which skill would you prioritise next?
  • What example would help us recognise progress?
  • When should we review whether the support is helping?

Where do families get NAPLAN results?

Individual reports are supplied through schools under state and territory reporting arrangements. Ask the school about delivery and any missing report. TestHero cannot retrieve an official student report.

If a result is unexpected, consider the wider evidence and talk with the teacher. Avoid drawing a diagnosis or a fixed judgement about a learner from a single assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good NAPLAN result?

Use the proficiency description for the learner’s year and assessment area. Strong meets the set expectation and Exceeding is above it. Read the result alongside classroom learning rather than treating it as a judgement of the whole child.

Can NAPLAN results before and after 2023 be compared?

Results from 2023 onward should not be compared directly with the 2008–2022 reporting series. The reporting system and measurement scales changed.

Can I convert a TestHero score into a NAPLAN level?

No. TestHero scores describe independent practice performance and are not official NAPLAN scale scores or proficiency equivalents.

Where can I get my child’s official report?

Contact the school. Individual reports are distributed through schools under the relevant state or territory arrangements.

Why is there a caution on 2026 Writing results?

Some students taking online Writing in Years 5, 7 and 9 experienced a technical disruption. Individual reports for those years carry a caution. Ask the school about the child’s result and consider classroom evidence alongside it.
