NAPLAN explained · A TESTHERO GUIDE

NAPLAN online practice and familiarisation

Learn the controls separately from the subject skills, and know what an online demonstration can tell you.

Where to try official NAPLAN online questions

The NAP public demonstration site lets you select a year and domain, then explore standard or accessible alternative tests. Use it to see the official response controls, tools and transition messages.

The demonstration is for familiarisation. It does not supply answers, and a writing response cannot be retrieved after submission. If you want to discuss a learner’s writing, also use a separate practice activity where you can retain the draft.

What does “tailored” or “adaptive” mean?

Official Reading, Numeracy and Conventions of Language tests use tailored pathways. Answers in a group of questions help determine the difficulty of a later group. It is not a rule that each individual correct answer immediately produces a harder next question.

A learner may see a different pathway from a classmate. The official scoring accounts for the questions encountered as well as the answers, so comparing raw percentages does not establish equivalent achievement. The public demonstration tests themselves are not tailored.

Controls worth exploring before an independent sitting

Do not assume a tool appears on every question. Tool availability depends on the domain, year and question. Use the official demonstration for the official interface and the selected practice paper’s instructions for an independent practice product.

  • Read the instructions and identify how the question expects an answer.
  • Try selected responses, text entry and the interactive types shown in the demonstration.
  • Check how to move between questions and use tools when they are available.
  • Listen to audio where the demonstration provides it.
  • Read section and branching messages before continuing.

Understand when a section becomes unavailable

The official Conventions of Language test prevents returning to spelling after moving to grammar and punctuation. Year 7 and Year 9 Numeracy prevents returning to the non-calculator section after moving to the calculator section.

Read the transition message and finish any permitted review before proceeding. A practice player may have its own section rules, so check the instructions rather than assuming every online resource works identically.

Online writing and the Year 3 exception

Years 5, 7 and 9 complete the official Writing test online. Year 3 writes on paper and therefore has no online writing demonstration task.

For online writers, practise typing, moving the cursor and editing while still focusing on planning and meaning. For Year 3, include handwritten responses. Neither typing speed nor handwriting neatness should replace idea development as the whole purpose of practice.

How TestHero online practice fits

TestHero is an independent practice product with original questions, a focused player, timing, navigation, flags and configured tools. Use it to practise a paper and review the available result.

It does not provide the official NAPLAN assessment platform or reproduce all tailored pathways. Its scores describe practice performance. One reduced-scope readiness check is free per learner; full papers and detailed reports require access.
